Plastic waste has become a serious global problem. Against this backdrop, a ban on disposable plastics is currently being discussed at EU level, and by the fall the German Federal Environment Ministry intends to have specific voluntary agreements in place with retail chains and manufacturers for less packaging. Topac GmbH, part of the Bertelsmann Printing Group and a specialist for print products and cardboard packaging, has also been dealing with the issue of reducing plastic waste for several months now, and is working intensively on developing sustainable packaging solutions for the food industry. To this end, the company is now collaborating with Mondini, an Italian manufacturer of specialist machinery. Mondini is exclusively represented in Germany and Austria by Ribbeck GmbH & Co. KG from Bad Bramstedt.
“Our goal is to transfer the printing and innovation skills Topac has established in media and cosmetics sectors to the food industry, and to use them in the production of sustainable packaging solutions for food in the future,” says Topac Managing Director Sven Deutschmann. “To this end, we will also rely on the comprehensive expertise of our new technology partner Mondini.” Mondini S.p.A. based in Cologne, Italy, is one of the world’s leading suppliers of innovative and highly efficient packaging machines for the food-processing industry.
Preparations for the manufacture of primary food packaging are currently in full swing at Topac’s production workshops in Gütersloh. Following the completion of its FSSC 22000 certification at the end of March, the printing and packaging specialist will now start manufacturing innovative packaging products that will make it possible to reduce the use of plastics by up to 70%.
